Founded in Philadelphia in 1949 by a Coast Guard veteran named Joe Kadison, Quaker Marine Supply has a long history of serving the sea-loving crowd. The company began as an outfitter specializing in marine hardware and clothing.  Starting in the 1960s, they became known for their long-brimmed caps, notably the Swordfish and the Oysterman, with its patent-leather bill. The latter was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway, who wore it duck hunting in Idaho and sport fishing in Cuba and Key West. Designed to withstand the elements, these iconic caps prioritized functionality but created an unmistakable look in the process.

One of Quaker Marine’s classics, this hat was offered for more than 60 years before the business closed down during the Great Recesdsion. It was the company’s most popular cap, generating a dedicated following over the six decades it was sold in the United States. It is now being manufactured once again — by hand — in the USA. 

While most hats today are a standard 6-panel, this hat is constructed with 4 lateral panels to deliver a low profile that reduces windage. Like the original, it features four eyelets on each side panel that provide ventilation. It is made of lightweight seersucker to perform and last, and has a dark green faux-leather under brim to absorb reflected light.

The Swordfish is shown with a curved bill but ships flat.
